Spinning Class at National Training – Day 2

January 23, 2011

I was not happy when my alarm went off at 6:00am but I knew I had to get to the training on time.

I was excited since I was going to have my first spinning class instructed by Ms. Bond and I knew it was going to be a challenge. I’ve never seen a woman in better shape than her.  After a quick group warm up we headed up to a private spinning room.  The room was quite small so we were very close together and you could really feel the energy.

Mr. LeGrow and I head up to the gym for our first spinning class

The bikes were all close together, the music was really loud and the coaches were all on fire cheering us on.  You could feel everyone’s adrenaline pumping.  It was awesome and the energy in the room was describable!

Everyone was working their hardest!

Everyone was breathing so hard that we fogged up all the mirrors in the room.

I absolutely love training with Stephanie Boivin! We always have fun together.

My bum literally felt bruised as soon as I got off the bike and then it was back to the hall for simulated competition training.  Basically that means a ‘pretend’ tournament.  The room was set up in competition style with the judges chairs and the competitors names were posted.

I was called up to do patterns against a women who in the adult division.  I did my 2nd degree pattern of choice.  My legs still felt like jello after the hard hour of spinning so my kicks certainly weren’t their best but we were all feeling the same way.

Then I was called up to spar the women in the adult woman heavy weight division.  My last sparring match was against the junior boy middle weight division. It’s good to get practice against different sizes and different sparring styles.  I ‘ll need that for the team sparring.

We watched some videos of previous 2010 European World Cup sparring and pattern matches.  Our coaches pointed out the good things that were done and they showed us what the caliber of competitors is going to be for us.  It was a bit intimidating but I’m still really excited.

You can learn a lot from old videos

At the end of training  the coaches each gave a pep talk and prepared us more for what to expect in New Zealand.  They also chose Mr. LeGrow and Ms. Chelsea Stone (from Regina) to be the two national team captains so if we have any concerns or questions we can always go to them for advice.  They were chosen since they’ve both had so much experience competing at World Championships.  It really hit me today just how soon the competition is.  I won’t see most of these people again until we are actually in New Zealand!  I almost don’t want this whole process to come to an end since it’s been so much fun with all the training and build up.

I’ll have a good sleep tonight and then get back at it again tomorrow with the few people that stayed in town.  I hope everyone has a safe flight home!  See you soon.

Team Canada Training – Day 1 – Ya!

January 23, 2011

It’s been such a great week training!  Canada is physically so HUGE that they had to divide the country into the East and the West for the National Training.  Two weeks ago there was a training in Regina and this week was the training for Eastern Canada in Gatineau.  Some of the competitors came from out west for a second training just for more practice.  They are staying with my coach for a couple of weeks and I get to train with them all the time too which is awesome. I just wish it wasn’t during my exams  at school.  I feel like I have too much on my plate right now.  I’ve even had to stop my soccer practices this week because of all the extra training.

National Team Members from the East

This weekend was all about team bonding.  It’s the first time we’ve seen each other since Nationals.   We’ve been so used to competing against each other for the last two years and now we are all on the same team helping each other.   It’s weird to be on a National Team but still do most of my training at my dojang with my coach or on my own.  It’s hard to train with team mates when they are everywhere from B.C. – Nova Scotia.   Getting together this weekend  was a good way to make sure that we are doing enough training so we don’t let each other down in New Zealand.

38 competitors walked into the University of Quebec in Gatineau ready for an intense weekend.  The 4 National coaches were there with a plan for each of us depending on which event we qualified for.  I spent most of my time perfecting patterns.   I wanted the coaches to see my patterns to make sure there wasn’t anything that I was doing wrong according to them.  It was funny since Mr. LeGrow (my coach) worked on his patterns right beside me and you could really see how similar our style is. People keep commenting on it.  I take that as a huge compliment.  He has always done well at World Championships.

I'm called "Mini LeGrow"

It's great to be able to work on my 2nd dan patterns

I also worked a bit on some sparring drills but I’ve been doing so sparring lately that I need to balance out what events I need more training for.

Mr. Hiltz leads a sparring drill warm-up

After a nice lunch it was back to more patterns for a few hours.

Later in the afternoon we had a treat at the pool.  It felt so amazing to loosen up in the water.  Every muscle in my body was exhausted.  Ms. Bond had circuit training in the pool which was a lot of fun and then we did some more kicking drills with flutter boards.  To end it off we played (or tried to play) water polo :)

Don't you just love the bathing cap :)

Kicking drills with the flutter boards

Water polo was so much fun!

After a quick dry off it was back to the gym to meet with the sports psychologist.  I was really looking forward to that part.  I won’t tell you what was discussed since that private for Team Canada!   :) We are lucky to have so many experienced world championship competitors.  We can all learn from their experiences and how they handle the pressure on competing at this level. There were definitely the same concerns amongst the ‘rookies’ so that was a bit reassuring too.  It’s just nice to be able to talk to people openly about how we honestly are feel so close to the competition date. It’s hard when my friends can’t really understand what it takes to go through this whole process.  They are very supportive but they can’t necessarily relate to it which can sometimes makes me feel alone.

This session was very inspirational.

It's nice to feel like part of the team!

By the end of the day we were all tired both physically and mentally but then we went out for a team dinner.  I was very surprised when they all started to sing “happy birthday” to me and brought out desert.  It was nice since I didn’t get to do anything with my other friends.  It was also special that my brother was able to join us.

My 15th Birthday :)

Triggers TKD Helped Me With My Power Breaking

January 16, 2011

Ms. Triggers competed in 1994 at the World Championships for Power Breaking so I’m lucky that she offered to help me with my technique.  It’s such a hard event to train for since you can really hurt yourself in the process.  When you break the boards properly it doesn’t hurt, but trust me….it kills if you don’t use the right technique.  You get a real rush as you cut through the boards.

Tonight we practiced for two hours straight and my hand and foot feel a bit tingly but that’s all.  First I practiced on a shield to get my measurement and technique to perfection.  I was glad my brother Greg came to hold the pad for me so Ms. Trigger could stand by and critique everything.

Then it was time to chop all the wood that the Home Depot gave me.  The biggest mission for tonight was to get over the fear of the metal holder.  In Vancouver I put everything I had left in me into my last kick and ended up kicking the metal holder instead of the board since I didn’t measure properly and I NEVER want to do that again!!

At the Worlds I have three different breaking techniques that I have to use:  Knife Hand, Side Piercing Kick and a Turning Kick.  I was able to do all the techniques tonight so that helped with my confidence.

My brother holds the pad while I warm up

Knife Hand Technique

Side Piercing Kick

Turning Kick

I know I could have broken more boards but it’s just not worth the risk to injury so close to competition. From now on I will just be training with shields.  Ms. Triggers also wants me to work more on visualization when it comes to the technique.

I really prefer to break wood but now at competition you break plastic boards.  They are harder since unless you hit them directly on the seam, they just won’t break.

The plastic board is like a high tension jig-saw puzzle

The board will only break if it's hit right on the locking system

I’m Having a Huge Fundraiser!

January 15, 2011

I’m very excited about a huge fundraiser that my family is putting on.  During the holidays I went to all the businesses in Barrhaven to ask for donations for my silent auction and raffle draws.  Everyone was so nice and gave generously in either products, gift certificate or services.  Planning an event like this takes a lot longer than we thought but I’m sure it will be great.   Everyone is welcome to join us.

There will be a demo,  live entertainment, contests, food, a huge bar, and a few guest appearances.

I will be posting a final list of items shortly so people can see in advance what will be available.  Stay tuned!

Home Depot Donated Boards for my Power Breaking Training

January 15, 2011

Training for Power Breaking can be very expensive since you have to break so many boards.  Once they’re broken they’re done!

It’s also different since plastic boards are now used at tournaments and there is a completely different feel to them.  The plastic boards have an interlocking seam in the centre of the board and it will only break if you hit it exactly in the right spot.  There is a lot more technique to power breaking than just a strong arm or leg.  We have the plastic boards but we don’t have the metal holder to hold the boards and no one wants to hold it in case I kick their hands using my full force by accident.  We have a metal holder for the wooden boards.  Too bad we can’t use the same holder for both wood or plastic.

This is the last weekend that I want to use any boards for training in case any bones get broken in the process.  After this, it’s just working on targets for accuracy.

Our local Home Depot in Barrhaven was very generous and donated wood to me for my training.  They even showed me how the wood is cut.  Ken Craig was so nice to me and even wanted me to wear the Home Depot apron and protective eye wear.  Safety first!  Home Depot also made a charge donation to my silent auction fundraiser.  I’m so amazed how much the community is helping me out.  Thanks Home Depot!

This is a much easier way to break the wood

Ken Craig the store manager was so nice to me

Off to the dojang for some fun!

Ms. Triggers from Trigger’s TKD has been helping me with my technique since she has competed at the World Championships for Power Breaking as well.  It’s so nice of her to give me her time and knowledge.  I really appreciate it Ms. Triggers!!!!

First Week Back at School/Training After Holidays

January 10, 2011

Well,  it’s back to school and exam time.  I have to admit it’s hard to fit it all in sometimes.  Lunch breaks are really the only time I have to study.   I’ve trained everyday either at the dojang or on my own, had two soccer practices and went to two soccer games.  It killed me sitting on the sidelines as my team played the two games.  I wanted to play so badly but I it’s just not worth the risk of injury so close to the World Championships.  I’m very lucky that my soccer coach and team mates are understanding.

My family and I have been working very hard at organizing a HUGE fundraiser event that will be on Feb 6th.  I’ve been going door to door to all the local businesses and they have been extremely generous by donating items for my silent auction and raffle draws at the event.  Friends have also really stepped up and volunteered to help out.  It can sometimes be overwhelming how nice people have been to me.  I’ll post the poster once it’s ready.

Training is going really well.  There are so many little details to work out.  Mr. LeGrow filmed my pattern the other day and we will be going over each movement in detail this week for improvement.  I’ve also been reviewing a lot of my previous sparring matches to see what I could have done better.  It’s so hard since you never know what to expect in sparring and what worked once before might not work against a different fighter.

I spent some time instructing a gentlemen at his first TKD class.   It’s good to be an instructor sometimes since it’s going back to the very basics.   You need to have a solid foundation before you move onto harder moves.  If you learn the first movements incorrectly it’s really hard to change them later on.  The best way to learn is to teach.

Last Few Trainings of 2010 – Happy New Year 2011

January 1, 2011

Happy New Year everyone!!!! 2010 was an amazing year. When I look back over my blog it blows my mind how many incredible people from all over the world that I got to meet, how many very cool places I got to travel to for competition or training and how many personal goals that I achieved. I don’t really have one highlight. My biggest goal was to make the Canadian Team and that was HUGE for me but all the little events leading up to it were just as important. Without them I would not have made it. I have so much to be thankful for with a good family and friends.

2011 promises to be just as exciting. I am really looking forward to all the training and then finally going to New Zealand for the World Championships. I also can’t wait to get back into soccer more. I’ve missed playing in the games this winter it’s just another choice that had to be made. At least I was able to still practice with them. I have to admit that I’ve given up a lot of social times with my friends over the last year but once the World’s are over I hope to make up for lost time. I always feel bad when my friends want to get together and I’m busy. I just found that when I wasn’t training or studying I just wanted some down-time for sleep and relaxation. It’s hard for friends to sometimes understand why I want to train so much or why this is so important to me. That is why you have such a strong bond with your coaches and your training buddies since they are in the same position and going through the same dedication for an event like this.

I’ve loved training over the holidays since there has been so much variety. Sparring, cardio, yoga, patterns etc…  It’s very different when you train on your own.  I just crank up the music and tune everything else out.  The time goes by so fast!!!!! I’m appreciating every work out now since I know I’ll be back in school next week and my time will be limited again.
